Chapter 19

He would die in this place, this living hell.

He doubted anyone knew where he was, and even if they did, they’d decided it had been best to leave him. By catching bits and pieces of conversation from the guards outside his door during his lucid periods, he had a general idea of what had happened.

The explosion in Guatemala had left him with the ability to create fire with his mind. He didn’t remember it, but after the initial blast, he had apparently been responsible for a second one, according to the guards. This had scared the people who’d masterminded the experiment, and that’s why he’d been locked up like this. Why they just didn’t kill him, he didn’t know.

He’d tried a few more times to start a fire since the last time, but hadn’t been successful because of his physical weakness. The energy he’d had the last two times he’d done it simply wasn’t there. Yes, anger ripped through him now, but apparently, not with enough force to make a difference.

How long had he been in here? The burns had begun to heal, but his whole body shook with fever. He supposed it made sense for an infection to move in considering he’d never had any medical treatment, nor had he any clothes since he’d arrived. The burns had been open to the elements of his cell.

Standing, he tried to push his arms out in front of him, but the skin in his back pulled, and he bit back a scream. He’d never be able to maintain his strong body without being able to move it.

He sat back down and brought his knees to his chest, gingerly crossed his arms over them, using them as a pillow. If he looked around his cell for too long, he became claustrophobic and panicked. He’d found that no one cared whether he lived or died, and they certainly didn’t care whether he had a panic attack. His fragile sanity was in his own hands.

When he sat with his eyes closed and his demons left him alone, he was able to transport himself out of this place, and for a few stolen moments, find happiness.

He remembered his first kiss at fourteen, and the first time he’d had sex with the rancher’s daughter at sixteen. Grinning, he remembered he’d finished almost as soon as it had started. They hadn’t been smart about it, either, and didn’t use any protection, and they did it in the barn. The stupidity of youth had been alive and well that night, and now, he was just thankful that she didn’t get pregnant, or that they were never caught.

He remembered his mother’s tender embrace, and even after becoming a man, there had been nothing better. He didn’t think about her cancer, or the way it took her from him so quickly, because he didn’t need any more depression rolling through him right now.

He thought of the members of his platoon that became his family. Lucas’ wife, Gabby, had always been so kind to him and invited him over to dinner multiple times a month.
