COMING OUT OF the building, Nora contemplated her next step. Ironically, she was almost grateful for the information Nils had given her. Sure, the way he talked about her greatest fear like it happening was a given sucked, but he’d also, sort of, helped her. He’d given her something to work on; her communication was lacking, so she’d fix it. She wasn’t helpless. Faced with Ryan’s past, and her own shortcomings, she decided to be more open with the guys. Push the truth envelope if she had to.

A gust of wind blew her hair away from her face, and she turned her head, pulling a curl from her mouth. Her gaze went in the direction she’d last seen Matisse. Before thinking too much about it, she strode toward the parking lot. He probably wouldn’t even be there, but if he was, he would be the first to face the new, improved, and communicative Nora.

She hurried along, breaking into a jog and then as fast a run as possible with her hands still tucked into her pockets. The parking lot, when she got there, wasn’t empty like she expected. There were a few people sitting on their bikes, helmets resting on their seats while they talked. Swallowing her anxiety, she approached them, quickly running through opening lines and introductions.

“Hi,” she said. Brilliant.

Four heads whipped in her direction: one woman, three men. She wondered if the woman in front of her was the one she saw with Matisse earlier. She had dark hair, tucked into a hat, and a thick, black leather jacket. Her cheeks were rosy red. She was small, like Nora, but lither, thinner.

“I’m wondering if you know were Matisse went.”

The four of them exchanged looks before the girl stood, approaching her. “Yeah. You’re a friend of his?”

For a moment, she wondered how she should answer and finally decided on, “Yes. His girlfriend.”

“You’re Nora?”

Her answer surprised her. It meant Matisse talked about her and she wasn’t a secret or embarrassment. “Yes.”

Smiling, the girl stuck out her hand. “Nice to meet you. Matisse went home. He was beat.”

“You’re the out-of-town friends…”

“They’ve already left. We’re the in-town friends.” She smiled, and Nora opened her mouth to ask her name when one of the guys called out, “Time to go.”

“It was nice to meet you, Nora,” she said kindly before putting on her helmet and turning her back.

Each of them kickstarted their bikes, tearing out of the parking lot. Their tires skidded and slid on the wet pavement. She shivered, hugging her arms tight to her body. Watching the motorcycles skitter worried her, especially when she thought of Matisse and his carefree attitude. Perhaps now with the friends gone, he would settle back into a routine.

Maybe this is his routine. How would she really know? At the very least, the snow would put a damper on these nighttime jaunts. Something else to discuss later.

Mentally, she gave herself a jolt. One last thing to do before she went home: pop in to one of the stores downtown and apply for a job.
