I was pleased. “Those are great questions! Especially that last one! Now that we have those questions done, let’s come up with games for the prom! Who’s ready for dessert?”

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:6).

Chapter 31

Surprise!

I texted Adam as soon as I got home. Adam called me immediately! He seemed quiet, almost shy. And that was not Adam. “Elle, I have to ask you something.”

“Okay,” I said. My tummy rolled over. Was he going to break up with me?

“Elle, will you go to the prom with me? I really want to take you.”

Wow. This was a complete surprise! The butterflies returned and went straight to my stomach! “Oh my gosh, Adam! I’d love to go with you! I thought you were about to break up with me!”

Adam laughed. “You are crazy. Why would I break up with you?”

I sighed and replied, “Remember I am not good at these things. This is all new to me. I have a question for you. As you know, I am not very fancy. Can I wear my jeans and tennis shoes to the prom? I can’t walk in heels, and I hate fancy dresses.”

Adam laughed and replied, “As long as I can be with you, I don’t care what you wear!”

I laughed. “I’m just kidding. I will wear a dress. I still might wear tennis shoes, though.”

We talked for a little while longer and then said goodbye and hung up. I was so excited that I had to call Angel and tell her.

Angel picked up immediately. “Okay, it has to be good. What is it? NASA asked you to join them on the space shuttle? You’ve been awarded ‘Detective of the Year’? Spill the beans, girlfriend! I can feel your excitement a mile away. Literally.”

“Adam asked me to go to the prom with him. When he first called, I thought he was going to break up with me. I am going to the prom with Adam McClatchy!”

Angel squealed her very high-pitched happy squeal and said, “You and I are going dress and shoe shopping Saturday!”

We hung up, and I did a three-way call to Miguel and Jerome and insisted that they invite Angel and Cilla to the prom—and not just to set up games and “man” them! I didn’t have to use as many threats with them as I had planned. They thought the idea was a good one, and we decided we would go together and hang out. We’d need to get all the games set up the day of the prom and then go home and get ready. How long does it take to put my hair in a ponytail and put on some clothes?

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I will say, Rejoice” (Philippians 4:4).

Chapter 32

The Last Training Session Before the Big Day!

We gathered for our last training session on Friday before Monday’s “Buddy Club Lunch launch”! (Say that five times, fast!)

Miguel politely quieted the chatter and began. “First, thank you all so much for attending this meeting.
