Chapter 22
I only plotted the new girl's death once or twice the following day, and was feeling good when I entered Legends to meet Lila. Well, I felt "good" in a relative sense. I hadn't come to any life altering decision about Gio, but for some reason I was looking forward to hearing what Lila had to say. Maybe I was also excited to see if she brought EZ's name up.
The new waitress, who was no longer all that new, came up to the table and asked me if I wanted my usual Labatt's. I smiled at her and nodded. No need to exchange words, and her tip increased exponentially for that. I was half-way through my pint when Lila showed up looking less than her usual put together self. She dropped herself into the booth like a rag doll and ordered a beer and a shot.
"You know it's Monday and not Friday, right?" I asked her.
"Shut it." She downed her shot as soon as it hit the table. "You gonna tell me what happened in Detroit with you and Gio?"
I rehashed the story, adding the sexy details I'd omitted when telling Mom. It felt like I was telling someone else's story, or maybe describing the latest episode of a TV show. Everything felt unreal, as if it were happening to someone besides me. I added Mom's advice at the end of the story, and asked Lila her opinion.
"Sara," Lila said on a sigh. "I've had a rough day, and I'm sorry but I don't have it in me to sugar coat it for you. So I'm gonna give it to you straight. You need to stop being a brat and take him back. The chances of you finding someone like Gio are slim to none."
"What do you mean like Gio?"
"He's nice to you. He's rich or it appears so. His ass is fine as hell, and you two could live out your fantasy of fucking in a tent."
"Who says I want to have sex in a tent?" That wasn't my fantasy.
"Sorry, that's mine. Whatever. On top of it, he understands your stuttering. I think you knew on some level he understood because you didn't stutter much around him from the start, did you?"
I thought about it for a second. Crap, she was right. Although I didn't consciously realize it, I knew I felt comfortable with him and that my stuttering wasn't that bad when we were together. I thought it was just because we had a connection and I felt at ease with him, but it was more than that. The signs were there, and I chose to ignore them.
"Yeah. Maybe I behaved a bit rash when I stormed out of his room."
"Ya think?" Lila wasn't cutting me any slack.
"Hey, I was drunk, just had super hot and super emotional sex, and I felt vulnerable and exposed."
"I get it, cousin, but I think you'd be a fool to throw this away."
"I know. I know. Well, I guess I have some apologizing to do," I told her.
