Problems with Nuts or Soy

Often on the Ketogenic diet or MAD, products using nuts and soy are included as they are a good source of protein. They are not essential, however, and alternatives are available. For those with problems with soy, avoid low-carb products with ingredients such as “flavorings” or “natural flavorings,” “vegetable gum” and “vegetable starch,” as they often contain soy.

Molly experienced seizure freedom after six weeks on the Ketogenic diet. Just as I began to breathe, after she had been seizure free for a month, I noticed small red hives around Molly’s mouth, neck, and belly after she ate peanut butter for approximately the 30th time. We took her to a pediatric allergist, who tested her skin and blood for a variety of common allergies. In both the skin and blood tests, she showed that she had allergies to peanut and soy. We decided to play it safe and avoid all peanuts, tree nuts, and soy products until we were able to see an expert pediatric allergist at Johns Hopkins.
