Matters were brought to a head on the 20th January 1936 when George V died at Sandringham. The next day Edward VIII broke all protocols by watching the proclamation of his accession from a window at St James’ Palace with Wallis Simpson at his side. The new king spent the summer cruising in the Mediterranean with his still married lover. It was obvious to all that the king planned to marry Wallis Simpson.

Government officials went into overdrive. The greatest problem was that the king was the Supreme Head of the Church of England and the Church did not recognise the right of divorcees to remarry. How could the king remain head of the Church and have a twice divorced queen at his side? Plans were drawn up to hold a secular coronation, not in Westminster Abbey but at the Banqueting House. Finally, the Prime Minister was summoned by the king who informed him of his desire to marry Simpson. Stanley Baldwin, the British Prime Minister, informed the king that his subjects would not accept Simpson as queen. The king suggested a marriage in which he would remain king, but Wallis would never become queen. This proposal was rejected by the Government. Baldwin presented Edward with three courses of action, the first to dismiss all thought of marriage, the second to marry against the advice of the Government (that would result in its resignation and one huge constitutional crisis) or the third option was to abdicate the throne.
