THEME-STREAMS
After incorporating exercise into my life, I noticed common threads in my day-to-day experiences. Ideas wound through my conscious and subconscious like rivers of awareness. I call them theme-streams.
Some of these themes include tapping, cross-lateral movements, prioritizing, spinal communications, mind/body connection, focus, balance, and the act of choosing.
The “choosing” theme seeped in last, but became primary in importance. It just took me a while to get it. Instead of thinking about what I couldn’t do, I began to focus on what I could do. I focused on choosing goals rather than on noticing obstacles. Along the way, obstacles lost their hold on me.
I found time to exercise regularly when I decided it was a health priority. Treating it as if doctor-prescribed makes good sense. I’ll admit a health crisis sharpened my focus, but isn’t that what crises do? There’s nothing like an emergency to crystallize your sense of priorities. Choice is active thought. I choose to take care of my health, and I choose to make it a priority.
Tapping and cross-lateral movements also are common theme-streams in healing. Cross-lateral movement is the act of moving one side of the body while engaging the opposite side of the brain. Multiple examples exist in tai chi, qigong, dance, T-Tapp exercises, and Meridian Tapping Technique (more on MTT in Chapter Seven).
Activities combining mind and body have profound healing affects. Do you want to fire up your brain activity and improve hand and eye coordination? Play Ping-Pong! A highly competitive sport in some countries, Ping-Pong can even be aerobic. What about tetherball? It’s one of the best examples of cross-lateral movement there is. Ping-Pong and tetherball are effective for healing and improving brain function.
When I realized the importance of self-care, I understood that I’d allowed my “good” health to slip away. A misalignment of priorities led me to make poor choices. I put my physical and emotional needs last. I’ve learned to strike a balance between my own needs and the needs of others.
