Chapter 5

Recipes to Entice with Flavor, Texture, and Aroma

Baby Purée Basics

Babies who eat foods prepared at home have a higher acceptance rate of new foods than infants who eat commercial baby food.[1] Yes, I know. The task of making homemade baby foods sounds daunting. Especially when you can go to the store and buy ready-made baby food conveniently organized by stage of development. Allowing your baby to eat home-cooked food provides your child with more flavor, variety, and nutrients. Here is the great news—all you really need is a fork. Honestly, a fork can get the job done and you do not have to buy expensive baby food blenders, as some manufacturers will have you believe. By the time your baby is old enough to start solids (six months of age), she is old enough to eat the same food as the family. Technically, you can just mash your dinner up with a fork and thin it with breast milk or formula, if needed.

Now, let’s get real here. Life happens and parents work. I do not want you to feel overwhelmed, or even worse, guilty, if you cannot make all of the food you feed your little one. If you are already over-scheduled, I recommend you make at least one meat or poultry bulk purée, and either the kale or arugula bulk purée, because you cannot buy these purées commercially.
