Carol became aware that Brett was watching her intently, his long frame bent like a spring about to rebound. He said, “Carol, you’ve got to find out who it is.”
“I’d like to ask you about some of the people involved. For example, how do you get on with Fiona Brandstett?”
Brett narrowed his eyes. “That bitch?”
“I gather that means not well?”
He shrugged. “I hardly know her, although she’d say she was Chris’s best friend.” The sneer in his voice was unmistakable.
Carol said, “Tell me about her.”
“There’s nothing to tell. Fiona Brandstett and her permanently pissed husband fancy themselves something special. I don’t know why Chris wastes her time on them.”
Carol led him through a series of questions about the Brandstetts, but he stubbornly resisted anything but general comments, all unfavorable but lacking in detail. About Mitchell’s business partners he was more expansive. In his opinion Gloria Tyne was an emotional time bomb ready to explode in someone’s face. Mitchell had let drop a few comments that made him think his brother was scoring with Gloria, but if he was, he was being uncharacteristically careful. Mitchell had usually boasted to him about any conquests—not that there were many—but he hadn’t said anything direct about Gloria Tyne.
Kurt Boardman? Couldn’t stand the man—typical salesman, slippery and insincere. Didn’t Carol agree? It appeared Kurt had been unwise enough to give Brett a few pointers on selling and Brett had not forgiven such impertinence. Privately, Carol considered Brett as needing all the selling tips he could get, but she nodded sympathetically as he denigrated his brother’s partner.
“And of course Kurt blocked Mitchell’s ideas of expansion every step of the way. Small man, small thinker—that’s what Mitchell said, and I couldn’t have put it better myself.”
When Carol queried if Kurt Boardman could possibly be a murderer, Brett laughed contemptuously. “Him? The little bastard wouldn’t have the guts!”
Asked about his brother’s secretary, Rosie Lee, his manner changed. “Rosie? She’s a darling…been with Mitchell for years and years…practically worshipped the ground he walked on…”
“Is it possible she was in love with him?”
Brett laughed aloud. “Rosie?” he said incredulously. “God! She’s middle-aged!”
Carol resisted the comment that emotions didn’t have a predetermined age limit, but she did allow an ironic note to creep into her voice as she said, “Perhaps I should have suggested a warm motherly love...”
Brett nodded. Rosie, although a childless widow, was certainly motherly. She had always been extremely nice to him and, in fact, had gone out of her way to help him get to Mitchell when Mitchell was playing hard to find.
The sullen resentment that seeped into his voice when he mentioned his brother was jarring. And, Carol reflected, something he should be intelligent enough to avoid now that he was a suspect for Mitchell’s death.
“Brett, before I go, is there anything you haven’t told me…even a small thing?”
There was a shadow of hesitation when he seemed to decide to speak or not to speak. Then he said, “No, nothing. I’ve told you everything. I just
