A PATH IN THE GRASS

Imagine a front yard with a well-tended lawn and an elegantly designed stone path that leads from the driveway to your front door. One day you take a shortcut across the lawn rather than walking on the path. For a while, the lawn puts up with your behavior and things seem fine. Eventually, however, a wear pattern begins to show up. The dirt below is exposed and an earthen trail reveals the new pattern that’s been established by repeatedly walking off the intended path.

In your feet, knees, and hips, the wear patterns from walking improperly are felt as aches and pains and revealed on X-rays as tears, arthritis, degeneration, and eventually as a reduction of the space in the joints. In an attempt to remedy the situation, many of my patients take supplements, like glucosamine, as raw materials to help repair damaged joints. Though this may help, a lack of raw materials is not the real problem and supplying new ones is not the real solution. In our path analogy, it would be like planting grass seed on your worn-out path in the hope that new grass will start to grow even as you’re still trampling on it every day. Once you correct your movement and get back on the right path, you’ll stop wearing out your joints and then your body will have a chance to repair the damage and heal itself. In other words, the grass will grow back by itself if you stop walking on it!
