Early Worship

Before the reign of Cyrus the Great, many people in Persia worshiped local gods or spirits associated with agriculture, war, and the important aspects of everyday life. Animals, ancestors, and the stars were all objects of worship. Worship was marked by animal sacrifice and the use of fire in the religious rites. There was no organized priesthood or religious doctrine, but learned men known as magi sometimes assisted in carrying out religious rites.4
