Dashboard applications come in many forms from simple to complex. Some dashboards are free and open source and allow you to track a limited number of metrics. Others are modeled around methodologies such as the balanced scorecard or come bundled into larger business intelligence packages. If you are tracking a complex set of metrics where supporting evidence is pulled from different sources, you will need a more advanced application. It is critical to know your needs before you begin analyzing a dashboard solution. At a minimum you need to have an integration capability, a visualization capability, and the ability to generate and display graphs and to analyze data.

Consider the potential risk of generating knowledge management metrics that are inaccurate, incorrect, or misleading. If your application layer is not adequate to support your data, knowledge, and people layers – if your application layer cuts corners or sub optimizes any aspect of that analytical process – you risk doing exactly that.
