CLOSED-ENDED VS. OPEN-ENDED ITEMS

Researchers can also choose to operationalize variables using closed-ended or open-ended question types. Closed-ended questions are those that provide a list of possible responses. The interviewee simply selects the one that is most appropriate to the situation. For example, here is a closed-ended question that could be asked in an attempt to measure religious affiliation:What is your religious affiliation?

1. Christian (Catholic, Protestant, or Orthodox)

2. Jewish

3. Muslim

4. None

5. Other (please specify) _______________________
