THE Metro, housed in a square building on the corner of 10th and Pine, looked to Luki like… well, a club. A little upscale. A dinner club, really, but it boasted a mezzanine with couches and chairs and a pit between the tables and the bar—and the party going on there would rival the raunchiest Luki had ever seen. He enjoyed it, living a role he’d never dreamed he’d live but finding it natural with Sonny at his side. In the course of the evening, he proved to himself that Sonny’s extracurricular erection didn’t matter and loving Sonny had always been his fate. He hadn’t known “fate” could be a sweet word, but when it involved Sonny, it fairly melted in his mouth. So light-hearted did it make him that he almost smiled as he reached out to shake the hand of Donnell, Jerry’s husband. A doctor of medicine specializing in infectious disease.
A surprising individual who spoke in a deep voice and an accent perhaps Scottish, and perhaps unexpected coming from a small man with thinning, darkish hair and a nose that begged to be called “pert.” “Jerry tells me the two of you plan to marry?” Two words with a double “r,” but somehow the accent made it sound like a rolling barrel and a throat that badly needed clearing.
Luki learned things: Jerry and Donnell had met during a trip to South America with Doctors Without Borders; Donnell and Sonny had once sat on a civic panel together, though they never met; Sonny liked Courvoisier, which he nursed all night and which made his kiss taste like bliss—extra special bliss—even more than usual.
And a little later, he learned from Donnell that the flush on Sonny’s cheeks and the glisten in his eyes most likely derived from a fever.
“I probably got what you had,” Sonny said, agreeing and palming his eyes again.
Donnell nodded in sage, Scottish-doctor fashion. “Ver-r-ra possibly. More than likely a bacterial infection.”
Luki spent a few seconds wondering why “very” deserved three “r’s” and an “a,” while “bacterial” only got the usual. Then he turned his attention to Sonny. Where it belonged. “We should probably go then, sweetie. So you can rest.”
“Now that’s too bad,” Jerry said. “But your man is right, Sonny. Rest, hot tea with lemon and honey, wrap up in a thick blanket and sweat it out.” Everyone at the table looked at Jerry with an expression of disgust. “Well, it works for me.”
“No rush, Luki. Finish your drink.” Sonny got up and headed for the back of the club, threading through the dancing couples and singles and threesomes and unidentifiable drunks in the pit, evidently on his way to the restroom.
Luki really wanted to go after him. My God, Sonny, what if you pass out? My God, Luki, what if you give it a rest? But then Luki did give it a rest because he began to notice something odd. “They’ll all be looking at you,” Sonny had said. Luki wasn’t so sure that was true, though he was getting the usual number of interested looks.
