Chapter Twenty-Seven
CREATING AN IDENTITY
Mouse had to dig deep down to the original specifications of the retinal and biometric scanners to fully understand how they worked, because the ones he had connected and tested were not functioning. Fly peered over his shoulder as he worked the keyboards, annoying him by refusing to sit down and let him work. Fly had no idea what the numbers and characters flashing over the screens meant, but that didnât seem to dull his need to watch what was happening. Mouse took a long, deep breath and let it out slowly, not intentionally to let Fly know he was annoying him, but more to focus his mind away from the distractions of people and back to the digital world he preferred to inhabit.
He had presented the idea, even led a mission to retrieve the two items and had almost faced catastrophic consequences when that mission went sideways, and now he realised he might have made a mistake. A very big mistake, based on an assumption.
The retinal scanner was easy enough; it just read and matched a recording of the scanned eye against the one saved to the database, and correlated the access level assigned to that recorded eye to the programming of the door it secured. That was simple; scan a new eye and save it in the database, along with a high-enough access level so as to be useful but not cause concerns to be raised.
The higher the access level, the fewer eyes were authorised to see what lay behind those doors.
The list of names with that level of access was obviously much shorter; and that meant an increased chance of discovery by adding a new name to it.
In the cases of the highly secured doors it was far better to hack the system and temporarily reduce the access level required for the door in question.
The biometric scanner was a different matter entirely. Most people believed that it was merely a device which scanned a personâs finger or thumbprint but Mouse, lucky in that his obsessive nature made him unable to rest until he understood how a thing worked, had found that it actually connected to the chip embedded in the neck of the person using the scanner. That two-stage verification process actually prevented an authorised user from opening a door when they were dead, which is something he had planned to try in the near future. The anger he felt at his own lack of knowledge threatened to send him into a spiralling rage because he had been presented with important information he had not discovered.
Mouse hadnât found the reason for that two-stage security protocol change, which was suggested in a seemingly insignificant document buried in the archives, and there was no direct link between the current security measures and the recommendation for them.
Had he searched for the reason through a different route, he would eventually have read a short memo from a then newly promoted Major, a young and privileged one, who had
