TRAMADOL COMBINES THE ACTION OF A TRICYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANT (TCA) AND OPIOID

Tramadol and its metabolite together have dual mechanisms for pain relief, including acting like a TCA and a weak opioid. Although it is not as potent as medications such as morphine, many people who use tramadol find that it is helpful. It is available in both short- and long-acting forms.

SPINAL OPIOIDS AS A LAST RESORT

Opioid medication can be directly injected into the fluid around the spinal cord in a procedure called an intraspinal injection. The use of intraspinal medications on a long-term basis requires outpatient surgery to place an implantable device (a pump) that serves as a reservoir for the medication that will be pumped through a catheter directly into the intraspinal space. This treatment is clearly reserved only for patients with cancer-related pain who have been unable to benefit from oral, intravenous, intramuscular, topical, and transdermal drugs.
