Becoming an Example

August 2002

Dear Sister,

It’s now been several weeks since I returned home from traveling to Germany, India and Sri Lanka.

Our children, Daniel and Sarah, came home for a few weeks during their summer break. I traveled back with them to India, and we stopped in Germany to visit my mother. She was so happy to see her grandchildren and me as well. My mother will be 88 years old next month. Her health is still quite good, and she is able to take care of herself. In fact, she is usually busy all day, working in and around her house. We helped her plant flowers and vegetables in her garden, which is her favorite place to be. I would appreciate it if you would remember her in your prayers.

A few days after we reached India, the first Sisters’ Seminar on my trip took place in Tripura. I was very happy to go there—it was the first northeast Indian state I was able to visit, because much of the region experienced years of struggles and violence. For this reason, my coming was unannounced, and many of our GFA families committed themselves to pray specifically for this meeting and my travels. I stayed at our training center and had the privilege to get to know Brother Anil, our Tripura leader, his wife, Suchitra, their sweet children and our GFA staff. I am so thankful for their vision and burden to reach the people of Tripura with the love of God and for their faithfulness in the midst of many struggles.

Our GFA training center began in 1996 with 60 students and was the very first Bible school in the state of Tripura. Since then, our graduates and students have established more than 200 churches and fellowships. It’s truly God’s grace—and a very ripe harvest field. While I was there, I had the joy of attending a baptism service for several new believers. It was held at a nearby fishpond where, since 1996, more than 500 people have confessed Christ publicly.

Our Sisters’ Seminar went well. More than 200 sisters attended, and I especially liked their singing. Together we studied what God’s Word says about Christian marriage, family life and serving the Lord as a woman. During the final session, many of the sisters came forward to share what God showed them during the sessions and what they were planning to apply in their lives. It was such a blessing to see their sincerity and love for the Lord.

Though I could only be there for a few days, I felt the Lord was going to answer my prayers and allow me to have a small part in the salvation of Tripura through encouraging my sisters.

Our next two seminars took place in Orissa, India, and Sri Lanka. Perhaps I will share a little about these two places in my next letter.
