However, by 29 May 1917, the former Foreign Secretary Edward Grey, at least had ‘a feeling we are winning the war’, as he wrote to Lord Buxton. ‘If so, Lloyd George deserves great credit … he really did push a lot of things through and get them done.’

The same month, after an intense debate in the House of Commons, Lloyd George and Churchill ran into each other at the Bar of the House of Commons, as they had done in February 1901. Following this meeting, Churchill began to bombard the Prime Minister with military strategies and ideas. Lloyd George found him to be not only a helpful ally but also a cheerful, life-enhancing companion at a time of great stress and heavy losses on the front. To their relationship Churchill also brought his intimate knowledge of the Army and his friendships with the generals, with whom Lloyd George had never felt comfortable.

Frances Stevenson gives us an insight into Lloyd George’s thoughts at this time:

19TH MAY 1917

Meanwhile D. is seriously contemplating some changes in his Ministry. He says he wants someone in who will cheer him up and help & encourage him … I think D. is thinking of getting Winston in in some capacity. He has an intense admiration for his cleverness, & at any rate he is energetic and forceful. D. has seen him once or twice lately & I think they have talked things over … I don’t know whether D. is seriously thinking of taking Churchill on, as he knows his limitations and realises that he is eaten up with conceit. ‘He has spoilt himself by reading about Napoleon,’ said D. to me.
