Chapter Twenty-One
The heart of a man to the heart of a maid â Light of my tents, be fleet.
Morning waits at the end of the world, And the world is all at our feet!

âShhhh.â
Jack held her tight against his chest, the buttons of his open coat digging into her bared breasts, and Elizabeth startled to giggle.
âQuiet, you sound likeââ
âSorry.â She tried to breathe deeply, burying into his chest. âWhat do I sound like?â
âA girl.â There was laughter in his voice.
She finally felt calm enough to lean back and look at him. It was almost too dark to see, but there was something in his expression, something tender, that melted her bones.
âIf I promise not to scream, will you do that again?â she whispered.
He started, stared down at her.
âWhat am I doing with you?â He sounded lost. âI feel like a lecher and a bully. You understand you can tell me to go to hell? That Iâm only pushing my luck because youâre letting me.â
She strained to make out his face in the darkness. âIâm not going to tell you to go to hell.â
âI . . .â He made a sound like a man in pain. âIâm pleased to hear it.â There was an edge of laughter to his voice again, a playfulness which Elizabeth had not seen in him before. âJack . . .â She swallowed.
âShhhh, sweet girl,â he whispered in her ear as he bent over her and tugged off her boots. Slowly pulled off the rest of her uniform, one piece at a time.
Looking down on her, Jack started on his own clothes, and she could swear his hands were shaking as they fumbled with his buttons. A tension built between them, and when Jack kicked his drawers off and stood naked before her, he waited one last, long moment, as if expecting her to change her mind.
When she said nothing, he gave a sigh and sank beside her on the narrow bed, his body heat enveloping her.
He started stroking her softly, lulling her, calming her, until she began moving restlessly against him, exploring the width and strength of him with trembling hands.
âThis is good.â She didnât mean to sound so surprised, but she was.
âBelieve me, it gets even better.â
She did believe him.
As his mouth worked its way down her body, and his hands stroked her like he could not get enough of her, she put all her trust in him.
And when he entered her, when her body clenched hot and tight around him, burning with the pain of her first time, and she looked into his face
