“At least Susannah didn’t win,” Mihi commiserated with her friend later as she helped her to untack.

Marley shook her head. “Small comfort when she ended up second,” she grumbled. “At least Bubbles thrashed her in the jump-off, and if Connor had left the rails up he’d have beaten her too, but he couldn’t resist a big gallop down to the last. Idiot boy.”

Van snorted as she led Covergirl out and pulled down her near-side stirrup. “Tell me about it. We’re surrounded by them.”

“Hey,” Lachie objected.

“Present company excluded,” Marley assured him.

“Don’t be too sure about that,” Mihi disagreed. “That one’s as bad as the rest, I promise you.”

“Well while he’s hanging around, he can give me another leg-up,” Van said, motioning him towards her.

“Careful, you’ll make Pete jealous,” Marley teased.

“That’s enough out of you,” Van replied as Kris walked up to her, looking dubious.

“Are you sure you want to do this? You can still scratch, you know.”

Van rolled her eyes as Lachie boosted her into the saddle. “Kris, we’ve been over this. I’ve paid the entry, I’m not giving up. Besides, it’s about time I put Covergirl to the test.”

Kris frowned. “It’s a big track, she’s still green at this level, and you can hardly walk,” she argued.

“It’s only a one-star, she knows how to jump, and I don’t need to be able to walk when I’m on a horse,” Van replied stubbornly. She glanced down at Lachie and grinned. “If you want to see some real jumping, come and watch Covergirl in half an hour, blitzing around the Grand Prix and showing them how it’s done.”

Marley shook her head and rubbed Covergirl’s ears. “If it gets too hard, just dump her off, come back to the truck and I’ll look after you,” she told the horse.

“She’s not going to dump me off, she’s going to jump clear,” Van retorted. “Just because you fell off her doesn’t make her unrideable, you know.”

“If Covergirl jumps a clear round, I’ll buy you all the icecream you can eat,” Marley told her sister.

“You’re on,” Van said, nudging the mare into action. “And I’m going to hold you to that promise!”
