THE FRIDAY AFTER Dizzyâs World, Hugh texted me on my way to pizza at Charlieâs house.
âJust agree. Say yes.â
I replied with question marks and called but he didnât answer.
When I arrived, Hugh was sitting beside Charlie in the living room.
This was the first time Iâd been in a room with both of them. Son and father.
A grape and its raisin future.
âSo, Prin. What do you think?â said Charlie.
âAbout? Is there a problem?â I said.
Did they know Iâd gone to Dizzyâs World?
âPrin, you know we have investors in the Dante parks,â said Hugh.
âYes.â
âAnd for lots of reasons I donât need to get into right here and right nowââ
âGo ahead, Hugh. Get into it,â said Charlie.
He grinned like someone was pulling a coat hanger through his mouth.
âDad, this isnât what I wanted to discuss with Prin, and I donât think heâs interested, are you, Prin?â
âAgreed,â I said.
Charlieâs grin faded.
âListen, Prin, thereâs a couple of things happening. Youâve probably heard that we have a big announcement happening at the plant next week.â
âI got the email,â I said.
âYou did?â said Hugh.
He muttered something about listservs and began texting.
âWhile heâs playing on his Game Boy, Prin, let me ask you the question Hugh keeps not asking,â said Charlie.
Hugh put away his phone and looked at his father.
âAre you convinced?â said Charlie.
âYes?â I said.
âNo. Youâre not. What Dad means, Prinââ
âYouâre going to tell him what I mean?â
âThen do it yourself.â
âNah. Letâs see what you thinkâs on my mind. Then do I get to say what I thinkâs on your mind?â
âWhat Dad means, Prin, is this: Are you convinced the parks are going to be authentic enough to convince people that, in coming to Danteâs Indiana, theyâre getting some sense of what it was like to be in Danteâs world? In Florence?â
âThat was never part of the plan for the park, so far as I know,â I said.
âBut it should be, shouldnât it?â said Hugh.
âAgreed? Yes?â I said.
âThank you. See, Dad? The thing is, Prin, our investors are European, and when they come next week, for our big announcement at the plant, theyâre going to ask how thing are going at the arenas. And, well, you know Europeans and how they can be. Right Dad?â
âPizzaâs getting cold, isnât it Prin? And I doubt Jenny Craig here is joining us,â said Charlie.
âItâs called a paleo diet! But I do need to get going. Anyway, Prin, Dad and I have been talking, and we think itâd be a good idea to have a historical recreation of Danteâs Florence featured in the arenas. That itâll be a value-add with our investors to help off-set the delays. Obviously I know weâre not going to have it in place by the time they visit us, next week, but Iâd like to tell them weâre working on it, when they ask. And Iâm pretty sure they will ask.â
âWhyâs that, Hugh?â
âI just said why.â
âBut did you, really?â
âSo. Prin. Can I tell them weâre working on it?â
âSure. Iâll mention it to the professors and the rest of the team,â I said.
