University degrees are known as carreras (careers). Each university offers a restricted range of subjects and its name may reflect the nature of the courses offered. Most carreras last four or five years divided by year or semester. Graduates are known as licenciados. For professional degrees, students continue into postgraduate education. Two years of unpaid work in the interior is part of the qualifying process for doctors.

Most universities are private, but the fees are not prohibitive. The best universities are public, but the entrance requirements are extremely stringent and only the cream of the candidates is accepted. The Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas is the best of this kind.
