Shifting the focus from himself to his protégé, Costa disregarded the importance of the timeline pace of events in the construction of a narrative able to encompass Brazilian modern architecture. Instead, he poured the whole weight of history on the sudden burst of a genius, an event that defied any rational explanation and was not prone to be easily repeated. Brazil’s inclusion in the ranks of modern architecture as a fortuitous exception was a strategic move: A polite diplomatic solution to settle the uncomfortable question proposed by the existence of a Brazilian modernity, without questioning the validity of the avant-garde discourse about modernity as a byproduct of advanced industrialization.
