6.5.5 Vitamins

High-dose vitamin C (66 mg/kg/h) during the first 24 h has been shown to reduce the initial fluid resuscitation requirements, by preventing the loosening of the intercellular tight junction, although definitive proofs are needed [15]. Vitamin C requirements are elevated through the wound healing period: 0.5–1.0 g/day is considered a standard intake.

Burn patients are particularly prone to vitamin D deficiency for multiple reasons. Dietary intakes of vitamin D are insufficient to correct plasma levels in burned patients [16]. Vitamin D repletion could reduce the risk of development of osteoporosis and the risk of fracture [17] or even muscular strength [18] as illustrated in pediatric studies, although the exact repletion dose is not known.
