Venice is a labyrinth on top

of the mountain of water. Ariadne

is a mariner, and has developed

wisdom in men from her parody

of Minos’ scuole and seminaries.

Time runs in a curve like the Grand Canal.

Futures masquerade as anarchies,

where young Andreas sinks in Hofmannsthal

past madonnas and courtesans by intervals.

The scuole of Venice resembled the livery hall institutions of London. They were religious fraternities that served as think-tanks and training institutes for the Venetian ruling class and officials.

The eminent Austrian writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874–1929) left a most intriguing incomplete novel Andreas oder die Vereinigten, set in the Venetian 18th century.
