Crayson

That look in her eyes took me back to that morning—the one that changed my life. She was scared, and fuck, it was because of me again. I’d been working my ass off to re-establish our relationship, to refocus and re-center the new Crayson and Nikita. However, at that moment she was watching that news clip, her response triggered me. I had done so much work around that part, and it was deflating to see we were right back there. It was like all the work we’d put in placed us right back at that place.

I had to leave because I wouldn’t have been able to physically touch her and hold that ‘event’ too. It was too hot and raw for my grasp. The only person that I could think about who might remotely understand was Vic, so I called him.

“Partner, how are you?” he asked.

“Fucked up,” I replied. “You got a minute?”

“Got a feeling it’s going to take longer than that,” he quipped, but I wasn’t laughing. Then he murmured, “Kat, sweetheart, I’ll be right back. Got to talk to Fletch.”

There was a kissing sound, then she said, “Tell him I got a woman for him.”

“Too late, he has one,” Vic told her.

“Oh, well, have them come over,” she said before there was another kissing sound, then a sliding door, and a final click.

“Sorry, man, she’s trying to hook everybody up.” He laughed. “What’s up?”

“So I told you that I met someone, like a fucking good woman. She’s just my speed. Well, hell faster than me, but I’m all into her. I can’t stop thinking about her. I find ways to be near here.”

I sighed as the words were struggling to come through.

“What I didn’t tell you was that she is the woman from years ago. The very one that was involved in the incident,” I finally told someone else.

Then it hit me that I had not shared that tidbit because I didn’t want anyone to judge or say stupid shit like it was because of guilt or some other bullshit.

“What in the fuck?” Vic’s voice raised. “You mean to tell me that the woman you’ve been seeing is one and the same woman that had you changing your whole fucking career. Get the fuck outta here.”

Shaking my head, I uttered, “I can’t even make this shit up.”

“Damn, man. Wow.” He whistled. “So what’s the deal?”

“Well, the deal is we’re fucked up. She was watching the news, which I’m sure was triggering. Then she jumped when I touched her and was hugging herself like she wasn’t safe with me. I’ve been with this woman for three months, and I can’t get her out of my fucking head. It’s like an addiction of some sort, but her holding herself like that, away from me, that shit just sent me into another space. I had to get the fuck out of there. I just couldn’t stay. I think I just fucked this up beyond repair. She’s super quick, witty, and smart as a whip.
