Foundations

A foundation is a charitable organization created by individuals or institutions for the purpose of distributing funds to support specific areas of interest. The best source for libraries to identify charitable institutions is the publications of the Foundation Center.

The national Foundation Center is located in New York City, with branches located in several libraries in larger cities across the country. In addition, the Foundation Center supports "Cooperating Collections," which are housed in libraries, community foundations, and other nonprofit resource centers throughout the United States. These resource centers provide a core of Foundation Center publications and supplementary materials useful in the grant-seeking process. Each Foundation Center has access to all the resources of the main center in New York, so check to find the one that is closest to you. The Foundation Center has a subscription database, The Foundation Directory Online, which includes 80,000 grantmakers and 500,000 different grants. Accessing this database will allow you to identify potential foundations whose funding interests match those of your library project.
