Chapter 16

MATTHEW

When Shayna steps out the front door, it’s like my fantasy is coming to life. I take a moment to wipe at the sweat on my forehead and drink in the sight of the woman who has been clouding my mind for the past few days. The cropped T-shirt she’s wearing is tight enough that it clings to her curves, and my gaze cruises the swell of her breasts through the dip of her waist. I’m about to accelerate through the turn that is her hips when I notice something sparkly. Is that a belly-button ring? Holy god of all shifters. How have I never noticed that before? Probably because she’s never worn shorts that hang that low on her hips before.

My wolf claws at me with his desire to bend Shayna over the newly constructed railing. She surveys my work with a hand placed at the base of her throat. “How’s it going?” she asks.

I gesture to the lowering sun. “I’m probably going to have to finish the rest of the deck tomorrow.”

“What if I helped?”

I blink, not sure I heard her right.

She chuckles. “Don’t give me that look. I’m not helpless. Nailing a board onto a frame can’t be that hard. It’ll help keep you from falling behind.”

Disappointment fills me. She came out here taunting me with her body and all that skin for business. “Right. The timeline.” I suppose I could work the saw while she nails boards in place.

I lift up the tool in my hand. “Ever use a nail gun?”

“No, but it looks like a bigger, more powerful staple gun. I’ve used one of those.”

“Okay, you’re right. It’s similar, but it’s a lot more dangerous. You need to be slow and methodical to start. Stay focused.”

She tilts her chin up. “I can focus.”

“I have no doubt.” But if she’s feeling anything like I am right now, it’s not going to be easy. I take the nail gun and show her how to operate it and then where to place the nails. “Now you try it.”

She grabs the gun and tries to pull the trigger with one hand, but she’s not strong enough and has to use two. Shayna lets out a little scream when she manages to shoot a nail through the board. “Wow.” She smiles at me. “Now I know why you have such strong arms.”

I watch as her chest rises with a deep breath. “And hands…” she says as she gazes at me with a heat in her eyes that makes my insides vibrate like a string on a guitar.

“Yes,” I say as the scent of her arousal accosts my nose. “This work makes me…” I glance at her mouth. Those ruby lips part slightly as she leans closer to me. I want to grab her and devour her with kisses, but I’m sure that would scare her away, so I wait. “Strong. This work makes me strong.”

Shayna smiles, and the nail gun clatters on the porch as she sets it down and comes to me to slip a hand around the back of my neck and cradle my head.
