Just as they were about to set off for the pond, Mia arrived.

‘Has Maurice come back already?’ Cosmo asked, feeling his tail start to go bushy.

‘No, not yet,’ Mia mewed. ‘I just came over to see how you two were getting on.’

‘We’re about to go down to the pond to look for Sybil ourselves,’ Cosmo confided. We think Maurice might have missed her when he looked there earlier.’

‘I’ll come too then!’ Mia said.

So they all left the house together and set off down the garden, with Kit dashing ahead at top speed, mewing loudly about how exciting it must be to hunt things during the night like grown-up cats.

‘Wait for us when you get to the bottom fence,’ Cosmo called out to him, but by the time Cosmo and Mia reached the fence themselves, Kit had disappeared.

The next thing they heard was a loud yapping.

‘Shush, Ramses! It’s only us!’ Mia yapped back at him. Mia’s mother had already taught Mia to speak Dog, since (as the professor-cat was fond of saying) it was rather an unsophisticated language and therefore very simple to learn.

‘Is that you, Mia?’ Ramses demanded suspiciously.

‘Yes – and your other neighbour, Cosmo. And the little kitten is Cosmo’s brother. Is he in your garden, by the way?’

‘Why else do you think I’m barking like this?’ Ramses replied impatiently. ‘He’s no right to come into my garden without my permission.’ He let out a little growl, because he found all cats highly irritating, even if they were Yorkie-sized and understood how nice it was to sit on a human’s lap – something that most other dogs just couldn’t seem to grasp. ‘What are you doing here?’ he demanded as Cosmo and Mia jumped over the fence to join Kit, who was cowering behind a tree trunk, keeping well away from the excitable Yorkie.

‘We wanted to have a look in your pond,’ Mia said.
