Chapter Thirteen

The boys sat on the floor in front of the fire, reading after supper. It was almost November. Daisy didn’t want them behind in their work before they had to transition back to the town’s school after Christmas. They asked her earlier in the afternoon what it would be like this year. She hoped that all of Tucker’s spending wasn’t giving them the idea they’d celebrate the birth of Christ by exchanging costly gifts. The homemade treasures in the chest at the foot of her bed were more valuable to her than anything from the general store.

Telling the boys they’d be in earshot if needed, Tucker and Daisy went out the front door for the promised walk.

The stars were amazing against the deep, bluish-black sky. Daisy threw her head back and spun in a circle, taking in the beauty of the night. Frogs croaked near the creek, and crickets chirped their night song.

“It’s such a beautiful night. I don’t remember the last time I was able to enjoy this time of night.” She stopped spinning and stood looking overhead with her arms wrapped around her middle. “I’ve been so busy trying to be a momma and papa that I haven’t taken time to relax.”

“Shall we?” Tucker extended his arm, and she looped her hand in its protective circle. She appreciated the warmth of his nearness in the evening chill, but she was careful not to get too close. Her mind and heart sent each other mixed signals when she was in close contact with Tucker. They walked to the end of the lane in companionable silence.

“How are you, Daisy?” Tucker ventured as they strolled back toward the cabin.

She shrugged one shoulder. “Getting better I suppose.”

“I’m glad to hear it.” He pulled his elbow into his side and squeezed her hand against his torso, placing his other hand over hers. The warmth of his hand gave her a slight chill. He pulled her closer. Part of her wanted to pull away. Part of her didn’t.

They walked on a little way before he spoke again. “You know, I’m a pretty good listener. It seems you and I have quite a history of you telling me your woes. I remember many talks about school, and your frustrations with your sweet sisters, and even boys.” He stopped walking and stared down into her face. The full moon lit her golden hair like a beacon in the darkness. “I’m here if you need me. I didn’t just come to work the land and help raise the boys. I’m here for you, too.”

“Thank you, Tucker. That means more than you know.” She started walking again. She would be more comfortable talking if she wasn’t looking into his face. “I heard what you said to the twins this morning down by the creek.”

“You did?” He paused for a moment. “I guess I’m going to have to be watchful so you don’t sneak up on me in the night,” he chuckled.

She joined his laughter. “I promise to warn you first.
