Two years later we met again, in the same hotel garden in Tangier. Walid radiated a sense of serenity and well-being that had been entirely absent during our earlier interview, and evidence of his successful reintegration into Morocco was everywhere: he continued to work at the riad, and his circle of friends now consisted mainly of men he knew from childhood, regardless of whether or not they had lived in Spain; he had recently married, he was living in his own apartment with his new bride, and they were expecting their first child.

Our conversation turned to the future, and Walid told me he dreamed of one day opening a restaurant—“Inshallah. God willing [said in English]”—and he had abandoned all thoughts of returning to Spain. When I reminded him that two years earlier he had been unsure about staying in Morocco, he said, “I was debating that, yes. But not now. I’m tired of all that, you know? There’s something in me that says, ‘Tangier, Tangier, Tangier.’ Now it’s time to return.”

Not long after our last interview, Walid’s wife gave birth to their first child. Three years after being deported, Walid had been able to rebuild his life: he had reached the mountain.
