Leisler had always been an outspoken opponent of King James II and his policies. His dislike for the man stemmed from 1675, when he, together with his son-in-law Jacob Milborne, engaged in a heated theological debate against Reverend Nicholas van Rensselaer, a Reformed Dutch clergyman appointed by James.
