They looked exactly like a family, right down to the little old grandma pushing the stroller. Except, Alice wasn’t like any grandmother Lacey had ever met. And never in her wildest dreams would she have guessed she’d be in a relationship with an Alpha male like John, pretend or not.
Usually a quiet and solitary person, Lacey hadn’t dated much in life, therefore, she felt inadequate in relating to the opposite sex, especially a handsome, viril man like John. She cut him a sideways glance as they approached the entrance to the fair. Still, she’d seen the occasional gleam of admiration when he looked at her. Maybe, once Ben and his friends were behind bars, she could take some time to see whether a relationship with John was possible.
John purchased their paper bracelets which allowed them to ride the rides without holding onto a fistful of tickets, and slipped Lacey’s around her wrist. Her breath caught at his closeness.
Stop it! She needed to focus, pay attention to what went on around her. There were more important things than the way he smelled or how his warm breath tickled her arm as he bent over her.
“Okay,” he said. “Eyes and ears open.” He gave a crooked smile. “We might even squeeze in a bit of fun.” He took Lacey’s hand in his, causing her heart rate to accelerate. “Let’s take Meagan to see the animals.
Inside the livestock shed, John perched Meagan on his shoulders and they gazed at the fattest cow, Lacey had ever seen. Some prankster had stuffed a pair of denim pants and placed them where it looked as if the animal was lying on someone. A smile teased at her mouth as Meagan giggled and pointed. Lacey lifted the camera around her neck and snapped a photo not only of the cow and dummy, but of the joy on Meagan’s face.
She leaned her arms on the fence around the animal and continued to watch the cow chew her cud as the others moved on. There was something relaxing about the animals. Soft moos and the clucks of chickens filled the air along with the not unpleasant scent of manure.
Maybe she should rebuild her grandfather’s house and live there, along with some chickens and a goat or two. Being a photographer, she could put down roots almost anywhere.
Someone grabbed her arm and pulled her behind a horse stall. Before she could gather enough breath to scream, a hand clamped over her mouth.
Hot breath covered her neck. “We can do this easy or we can do this the hard way.” Ben Harper chuckled. “Hand over whatever it was that your aunt left you, and you can go on with your sordid little life of living in sin with Mr. Canyon.” His free hand groped at parts of her body better left untouched.
She gasped and squirmed against his hold.
“I like it when they struggle. Remember that next time.” He shoved her hard enough to send her face first into a pile of hay.
