Chapter Fourteen
Leon rolled his shoulders and let up on his grip on the reins. His legs were sore, his arms heavy, and everything connected was equally spent. Who knew picking apples was such work? Hannah surprised him again. Leon already knew she was a hard worker, but she could literally outwork most men he knew too. He was glad he was helping, lessening her burdens working there. He would do anything to help take that wearied look from her.
He did well to hold back the surprise she gave him by agreeing on swimming lessons. The idea had been birthed out of the air. Just the thought of being near her more pleased him. Despite telling himself to keep a good armâs length away, he found himself drawn more to her as days lingered from one to the next. She hadnât a clue how much she amazed him. Few her age would dare take on such a task as she had, and it was plain to see she had put her future on hold.
He shook his head and let out an amused chuckle. He still couldnât understand it. Out of all the maedels out there, the one who found nothing about him pleasing was the one he couldnât stop thinking about. Leon was a smart man, he figured. He knew that some forces couldnât be ignored.
The sun inched away over the hills behind him. He shouldnât have left the Troyerâs so early today, but he needed to talk to Lester. His brotherâs continued absence was hurting their parents. That worried look in mudderâs eyes, the stern frown on his daedâs face when they gathered at the table for supper each evening, was wearing on the lot of them. Even Lovis, the youngest, seemed not himself these days. Tonight, Bishop Schwartz would be joining them for supper. Lester needed to be present, or Leon feared the church elders might take to hand to search him out themselves.
âCanât be riding two horses with one hind end,â he repeated the old adage Bishop Brennon used to spat. The man said a lot, but Leon found this wisdom a good one. A man had to choose the life he wanted to live and dodging between worlds only showed his lack of faith, responsibility, and ability to make a decision. The way Leon saw it, his wandering bruder had had his fun and needed to come home. Leon feared if he didnât act now, try to talk some sense into him, Lester might never return. That would break their poor mudderâs heart for sure and for certain. It was time to herd his brother back to this side of the fence.
Leon veered Marva down the long stretch of street and found a safe place behind the three-story building in town. The dark alley held a sense of eerie demise, a stench of garbage punished the air. He climbed down and tethered Marva to an iron gate, perched in welcome with no fence connected to it. Just deserted, standing there alone.
