I’m stress eating. Clean out of Kit Kat, I’ve defaulted to pixy sticks and full-sugar coke. It’s so delicious. Too delicious. I rarely let myself indulge. But I’m nervous as hell and not much help to Avi and Philip from so far away. My computer shows a split screen of rotating monitor views and they’ve got me by phone, on speaker, in the van.

I’m not good at waiting. I never have been and I need some sort of distraction. I can’t dwell on the danger they’ll be in if they’re discovered, and what will happen in four days when Darby lands in Sydney. If I don’t give myself something to do while I wait for this to unfold, I’m going to think too hard about my own father, and how badly this news will hurt Darby.

“Frank’s plane landed,” Philip confirms. We’ve been waiting for this. He’s hacked into air traffic control and just got information about the tail on Frank’s private jet. We still don’t know who he’s planning to meet and Avi’s stayed away from his mob informants.

A drone that we set by the side of the road, across the street from the security gate at the entrance, has been set up to capture the makes and models of the cars that enter, and their license plates. That will be our first indication of who’s coming and going if we don’t get good shots of men coming in and out of cars. If they’re angled strangely, or wearing hats, IDs could be difficult. And since Avi’s still working on hacking into the camera feeds inside the factory, this may be all we have.

The first car—the one we believe carries Charlie and Frank—is useless. It’s a limo with a license plate that points to a taxi service that’s headquartered forty miles away.

“He’s going to be on the Republican ticket,” I say. “Shouldn’t he have a secret service detail or something?” I ask.

“Not until the nomination is official,” Avi murmurs.

The car makes its way down a long gravel driveway that kicks dirt up around its shiny black finish. I’m holding my breath when the car stops and the doors open. I knew it was going to happen, but my heart still leaps into my throat when Charlie Sweeney steps out of the car. Frank follows, and three other men get out. Unlike Frank’s lean frame and Charlie’s heavyset one, these other men are wide, thick and stony-faced. These last three are obviously part of their security team.

Frank and Charlie are chatting jovially. It sickens me to see both of them, but their lightness is a good sign. It means that they feel good going into this meeting. They don’t suspect they’re being watched. And they’re confident they have the upper hand.

I’ve been thinking about it. Most likely, the mob will simply want a piece of the action. Sure, Frank’s operation cut into their business, but ultimately, the drug-runners win when more customers are addicted to drugs. If Frank had offered distribution
