As we got to the house everything was calm. All the lights were out. Everybody seemed to be asleep. We both eased in the front door. Pleasure went into the kitchen for a glass of water and I went in to check on my mother.

Quietly, I walked down the hall, stopped at my mother’s room, gently turned the knob, and opened the door.

Immediately my blood ran cold. My mother’s heart monitor was beeping like crazy. I quickly turned on the lights and ran over to her bed. She wasn’t breathing and she had no pulse.
