This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

Titus 3:8

* * *

Aunt Rebecca was immersed in a serious conversation with an Amish lady and Morgan had no desire to join in. Instead, she searched the crowd at the wedding reception for Jacob. While he wasn’t supposed to be around me so much that it would cause suspicion, he at least could have hung around me a little, she thought.

Morgan finally saw him leaning against the entranceway to the barn. He was talking to someone, but Morgan couldn’t see whom it was. She decided to walk over to the drinks table, hoping to get a better view. When Morgan finally saw who Jacob was speaking to she was shattered. Jacob was talking to another girl. No wait, not one girl, but two girls. Two pretty Amish girls.

The girls were flirting with him; twirling their kapp strings, giggling at his jokes, and one even touched his arm as she spoke to him. They’re flirting with my Jacob! My Jacob! He doesn’t seem to notice that they’re flirting with him. Is he enjoying their company? He’s not leaving them. I wonder how long he’s been standing there speaking to them?

I can’t let him know that I’ve been watching him. Morgan took a drink, turned around and went to see if Rebecca had finished her intense conversation with the Amish woman.

Maybe Jacob isn’t as committed as I am. I thought we were on the same page; I liked him, he liked me. He did say he wanted to be more serious.

I guess you don’t realize how much you love someone until you realize they might not love you back.

Morgan could not find Rebecca and then someone tugged on her arm. She swung around. “Jacob.”

“Meet you behind the barn in five. I’ll go first.”

Jacob had nodded his head toward the large red barn that was to one end of one of the food tables. Morgan looked around to see if she could see those two girls that Jacob had been speaking to and she saw them speaking to another man. A few minutes later, Morgan hurried to meet Jacob.

“Jacob, this is a risk, isn’t it?”

Jacob smiled at her worried face. “I saw you speaking to my mudder. What did she say to you?”

“Oh, Sarah made me say hello to her. She said that she was doing it to break the ice or something like that. I don’t know if it was a good idea.”

“Did you like her?”

“Of course, I liked her. She seems really sweet and nice, but it’s what she thinks of me that counts and if I’m not Amish she will never approve of me as a match for you.”

“Well, I’m through with the hiding thing. I want you to meet my parents soon, in a few days time. I want to be with you, and if that means leaving the community then that’s what I’ll have to do.
