Carrick looked at her, considering how much to tell her. There was so much to impart and so little time. The physical and cultural nuances of his race could not be condensed to a few sentences. “Meshacha is a special form of mating among my people. It is so rare nowadays it is almost mythical. I believe that we are becoming Meshacha.

He circled around the chair before stopping in front of her. “You see that brand on your chest? Your eyes glow with the same color. Your pheromones and mine are reacting to each other, mating and mingling on levels we can’t even yet perceive. That is what happens when a couple is Meshacha. Their desires are linked, even if their bodies or minds want to believe differently. In the beginning, anyway. Soon we’ll be as compatible as any couple from either of our planets. I know you want me, so why are we wasting our time and energy talking when we’d both much rather be fucking again and again.”

He took a deep breath. “I can’t say I understand why this is happening to us, but it is a fact. Your desire for me grows with every breath you take. Our emotions and lust are overtaking our caution and sense. Don’t try to analyze this, my Mesachen. It defies our understanding. It just is.”

She met his eyes and he saw something in her look. Could it be shame? “We mated without protection, and you sealed inside me… I didn’t imagine that, did I?” Her voice softened, a tremble entering it. “It was like we were animals.”

He wanted to take her into his arms, to soothe her worries, but he knew that it was too soon for that. Their bond couldn’t handle a rejection at this delicate stage of their relationship, not with emotion ruling their thought processes.

“Not like animals. Never like animals. What happened between us is sacred to my people. It is a spiritual bonding as well as a physical one.” He paused, searching his datachip to see what she meant about protection.

“You haven’t any reason to worry about protection, Rowan. I am healthy and without any diseases of any nature.”

“And pregnancy? What if I have little alien children?”

“Not alien. We’re perfectly compatible humanoids. Please don’t concern yourself with troubles that haven’t yet occurred. We have enough problems of our own. We don’t need to borrow any.”
