Tennessee has established seven Safe Baby Courts to assist in cases of child abuse and neglect (including fetal abuse cases) as they make their way through the judicial system. The program’s webpage can be found at https://tnsafebabycourts.org/. The courts work with children from birth to 4 years of age and they focus on compassion and the long-term needs of the child. They courts are designed to reward progress and facilitate a quicker release from the system if the child’s safety is ensured. The program rests on four core concepts:

Team Collaboration – making sure that everyone is on the same page and working together; both within the family and within the larger judicial system

Family Engagement – making sure that the family is meaningfully engaged in the judicial process; they are active agents

Intergenerational Trauma – acknowledging that to help the child, you must be open to addressing trauma within the family

Role of the Judge – in addition to providing judicial oversight, the judge works to ensure that both the parents and the professionals involved with the case feel respected; the judge attempts to support the parents and meet the child’s needs
