âI canât imagine what sheâs going through,â Trisha said. âEspecially if sheâs innocent. Can you imagine being accused of something you didnât do, then end up having to go to jail because of it?â
Pricilla shuddered. No she couldnât. The closest sheâd ever come to the inside of a prison cell was when sheâd borrowedâor rather, stolenâan ATV from the rental shop in Rendezvous. At the moment, the impulsive act had seemed necessary. Looking back, she knew there had to have been a better way to deal with the situation, which was a viewpoint that both Detective Carter and Max had made very clear to her.
Pricilla finished dressing then hurried down to the lobby in better spirits. With Trishaâs wedding taken care of, it was time to concentrate on herself and Max. Something she planned to do just as soon as this contest was over.
The sheriff caught her on her way down the hall. âMrs. Crumb. I was just on my way out. Do you have a minute?â
Pricilla glanced at her watch. âIâm not due in front of the camera for another twenty minutes, but I canât be late this time. Iâm hoping that our finding the knife in the lake will help Clarissaâs case, but Michelle wasnât impressed with my appearance after I fell into the lake.â
âIâm sorry about that.â The lawman fiddled with the brim of his hat between his hands. âBut I still owe you a tremendous thanks for what you did.â
âDo you think the knife will help Clarissaâs case?â
âI hope so.â
âYou hope so?â Pricilla fought back the frustration. While she understood that there could be no guarantees at this point, sheâd thought the evidence would tip things more in Clarissaâs favor. âYou donât sound very positive.â
âWeâre certain now that the knife you found came from Clarissaâs kitchen.â
âWhich doesnât prove she killed Norton.â
âNo. And youâre right in that it should help her case. If the knife had been found closer to the crime scene, things would probably be more cut-and-dried. As it is, the DA realizes that there was no way for Clarissa to kill Norton and dispose of the knife so far away.â
As much as she didnât want to, Pricilla had to ask another question. âWhat about the possibility that she killed him, disposed of the knife, and then returned to make it look like she didnât do it?â
âThe coroner believes there wouldnât have been time for her to kill him, throw the knife in the lake, and return to the point where you saw her standing over him.â
âThen that should be our proof. Right?â
âOr, according to the DA, it implies that someone else was involved. Her lawyer is doing everything he can to get her released because of lack of evidence, but in the end we may be looking at a trial.â The sheriffâs expression tightened. âAny news for me?â
âThere are a couple of things Iâm worried about.â A small group Pricilla had noticed from the contestâs audience entered the lobby making a lot of noise.
