Revisiting the support/challenge matrix

What is the impact of a courageous goal on the support/challenge matrix? It is our view that the courageous goal defines the scale of the matrix itself. This is best represented in a diagram:

The courageous goal stretches the axes of both the support and the challenge aspects of the matrix. The courageous goal demands an order of magnitude difference in both the level of support and the level of challenge that the coach needs to bring to the coaching relationship. Both extend in equal measure in order to create a transformational space rather than a developmental space.

This impact has significant implications for the contracting conversation that precedes any commitment of coach and coachee to this style of engagement. Are both parties willing to take a risk, to commit to this endeavor, to build the mutual trust and respect that it requires, and to contemplate the very real joy and pain that any such ambition involves? This is not a trivial undertaking. The principle of building the contract and honoring the contract assumes a new significance in the context of a courageous goal. Both parties look into each other’s eyes and ask: “Are you up for this?” As each success and failure comes along, the question is asked again: “Are you still up for this? Are you prepared to come to the edge, to be pushed, and to fly?”
