Which brings me to the beginning. Words are fascinating critters. They writhe, they shift, they hide, they contain hidden cores, they emerge from all sorts of nooks and crannies. Consequently, it behooves (from the Anglo Saxon behÅfian âto need, to profitâ) us to pay close attention to what we say and what we write. One person may use a particular word that, at some point in its history, was positive; a listener or reader may associate it with a more modern, more negative meaning, and by doing so wrench what was said to meet a different agenda. Same word, different meaningsâ¦and from them can spring animosity, virulence, and hatred. And especially as writers, we need to constantly be alert to the possibilityâif not the probabilityâthat somewhere along the line, our readers will apply their understanding of words, meanings, and history differently than we intended, and the story, the essay, the dialogue will collapse in misunderstanding.
