The Cross-Dressing Cannibal

It doesn’t get much more horrific than the cross-dressing cannibal who claimed his female personality was responsible for killing and eating his victims.

There is perhaps nothing scarier than the killer who eats their victims. We are drawn to these grim cases of evil wrongdoings with a macabre fascination for how they played out and the reasons behind them. True crime has a way of drawing us in and gripping hold of us tight.

It’s bad enough when one person is convicted of cannibalism but coming from a family of cannibals is something on a whole other level. For Hadden Irving Clark, AKA: The Cross-dressing Cannibal, he was simply following in the footsteps of his brother – who killed and ate his girlfriend.

Hadden was suspected of being a serial killer but it had never been confirmed. He is known to have killed two people, one child and one adult, but it has been suggested he killed more when he confessed to killing dozens since 1974.

Born in Troy, New York, in 1952, his childhood was far from peaceful, at least behind closed doors. His parents promoted the image of a perfect family life, his father was a chemist, whose job was high-earning enough to keep them in good stead. Behind closed doors, it was quite different.

His parents were closet alcoholics and were violent towards each other and their children. When his mother was drunk, she referred to Hadden as Kristen, and made him wear girl's clothing, due to her anger that she was birthed a boy instead of a girl.

This had a long-lasting effect on Hadden, and he would dress in women’s clothes for most of his private life, even going as far as believing there was a female entity within him that he couldn’t control. He would claim his female alter-ego was responsible for the crimes he committed.

After his father committed suicide when he was a teenager, Hadden’s downward spiral to death and madness began. His mother moved the family to Maryland where Hadden turned to torturing and killing small animals. He also bullied other children and was generally anti-social.

He had two brothers and one sister, one of whom was Bradfield Clark , who was convicted of killing and cannibalising a woman who had spurned his sexual advances in 1984. Bradfield had invited Patricia ‘Trish’ Mak and her husband to a barbecue but Trish’s husband couldn’t make it, so she went alone to Bradfield’s house.

After a night of heavy drinking, Trish refused to be his girlfriend, and Bradfield responded by slamming her head against a wall, strangling her, and cutting up her body. He sliced off her breasts and cooked them on the barbecue grill. He confessed to his crime and was convicted of the murder. If that was bad enough, what Hadden did was even worse.

Hadden’s only sister ran away from home as a teenager and later proclaimed she didn't have a family, relating to them by name only. Who could blame her? Her brothers ended up eating people, after all.
