Follow-up screening options may include:

• Repeat Pap tests

• Colposcopy—Your physician will examine your cervix with a magnifying instrument.

• Biopsy or endocervical curettage—a procedure in which a spoon-shaped instrument is used to scrape the mucous membrane of the passageway between the cervix and uterus, obtaining a small tissue sample, which is then sent to a pathology lab to be examined for abnormal cells8

If treatment is necessary, a surgical excision procedure, cryotherapy (freezing of the cells), or laser therapy may be done to remove or destroy the abnormal tissue and reduce the risk of cancer.9 Most women with cervical cell changes or preinvasive cancer have no symptoms. Screening tests, therefore, are very important. The HPV test is reported as “negative” or “positive.”
