Chapter Fourteen

“Brian Eugene Richards!”

Brian sauntered into the kitchen where Taya and Mrs. Richards sat at the table staring out the window at the snow-covered ground. Mrs. Richards set her cup of coffee on the table and gave her son a stern look.

“What did you do to your sister?” She did not blink. Taya watched as Mrs. Richards dismantled the soldier standing before her.

“I was just playing, Mom,” he said, sounding boyishly defensive.

“What did you do?” she asked again, speaking with a calm that caused him to shift his weight from one foot to the other. Taya watched with fascination at the artful way Mrs. Richards maintained control, recognizing the same subtleties Samantha had demonstrated weeks earlier. Without a word, Mrs. Richards picked up her cup of coffee and took a small sip, never breaking eye contact with Brian. Taya watched as his shoulders slumped and his head drooped, no longer able to keep his mother’s stare.

“I’ll go turn it back on,” he said as he walked out of the kitchen. Taya caught the slight upward curve of his lips as he walked away.

When he was out of earshot, Mrs. Richards let out a soft laugh and turned to meet Taya’s admirable gaze.

“What did he do? How did you know? And how did you do that?”

“He shut off the hot water while she was in the shower. It’s much too cold for him to be torturing her like that. I knew because he’s done it before and I could hear the pipes clank when he did it. Why? Now that’s a question I’d like an answer for.” She picked up her coffee cup.

“How did you do that though?”

“Do what?” She sat her cup on the table and looked at Taya.

“You hardly said a word to him. It was as if you gently cut right through him with your stare. It wasn’t harsh, but you totally dismantled him, rather quickly too. I thought he would have been able to stare you down, being a soldier and all.” Mrs. Richards smiled knowingly.

“Hmm, I suppose that is a skill developed throughout motherhood. I hadn’t really thought about it.” She stood and walked to the sink, putting her cup next to it. “But it works, so I’m grateful. He can be a handful sometimes.” She walked to the doorway. “I’m going to go check on Samantha. Hopefully I can get her calmed down before she plans how to retaliate.”

“Samantha? Retaliate? Are we talking about the same sweet, quiet, brown haired chef?”

“Yes, we are. When it comes to her brother she can be…less than gracious.” Mrs. Richards shook her head and walked out of the room. Taya could hear the stairs creak softly under her weight as she went to talk with Samantha.

Taya stood from the table and walked to the sink, placing her cup next to Mrs. Richards’. Brian poked his head around the corner disrupting her thoughts.

“Did Mom go upstairs to talk to Samantha?” he asked with a mischievous glint in his eyes.

“Yes. She went to save your neck apparently.
