“TWO DAYS IN a row isn’t a hookup anymore.”

Gabe let his forehead thunk against his desk. “Can you keep your voice down, please? And, yes, it is.”

“Nope.”

“It means it’s a great hookup. And what would you know? You’re married.”

Maggie sat on the corner of his desk, and he almost pushed her off out of spite. Instead, he sat back in his chair to glare up at her.

“You need to go out this weekend and pick someone else up. If you don’t, this is at least a friends-with-benefits situation. It could be more.”

“That doesn’t make any sense.”

Maggie smiled at him like she knew something he didn’t. Maybe he would push her off the desk. “Yes it does. If you’re only interested in sleeping with this mystery man, then it’s more than a hookup. You’ve gone beyond your original objective, so it’s more.”

Gabe laughed at her. “Sleeping with? You realize that’s not what we’re doing, right?” He tilted toward Maggie and crooked his finger. She moved over to meet him. Gabe dropped his voice to a whisper. “We’re fucking in semipublic places.”

Maggie jumped off the corner of his desk. “Gross, dude. I didn’t need it spelled out that clearly. It’s like finding out your little brother is having sex.”

Gabe doubled over in his chair, laughing at the shocked and horrified expression on her face. “You’re the one who came over here to give me unsolicited advice.”

“Your satisfied glow was disrupting my productivity.”

Gabe rolled his eyes. “I’ll try to keep my postcoital bliss to myself.”

“Seriously, go out this weekend. Try somebody else before you get too attached to some dude you met on an app.”

Gabe tried to wave her off, but Maggie was already walking away. A nice way to make sure she got the last word in.

It was hard to work with Maggie’s advice in his head. Perhaps it wasn’t a bad idea. He’d had bad luck picking people up at bars even when he wanted to. It couldn’t hurt to try to see what happened. He might get lucky, and then he’d get Maggie to shut up about Mark.

Gabe’s phone pinged.

He expected a message notification for Cruised, but that wasn’t it. Mark had texted him.

Thursday, 11:37 a.m.

I had a good time this morning. Sorry we can’t meet up tomorrow, but I look forward to Monday.
