6 Britain under Thatcher

Did Mrs Thatcher’s government change Britain? If so, in what ways was the country, and its position in the world, different in November 1990 from where it had been in May 1979? These are deceptively simple questions which do not yield straightforward answers. One can never know how much change would have occurred if another political party or a different Conservative premier had been in power. For a history series it is also particularly appropriate to note that the Thatcher government’s impact will look very different in the year 2000 compared to the way it will appear 30, or even 100, years after her fall from power. Consider how an evaluation of Elizabeth I’s reign might differ whether the judgement were made in the year of her death, 1603, in 1613, 1633 or even 1703. Historical judgement is dynamic: but, with good quality evidence and a critical intellect, important judgements could have been made about Elizabeth I in 1613. That is the position we are now at.
