Chapter 22

Lore had never thought she’d be in a dungeon staring at a deepmonger who wanted something from her. The Ashen Deep weren’t even supposed to be alive. Yet, they appeared to be thriving in the darkness, away from all other elves.

Here she was. Watching this young man and hoping he knew what he asked of her was impossible. But also hoping that he never realized just how much she was going to get out of this interaction.

“Excuse me?” she asked, still a little unsure she’d heard him right.

“You said there was another world out there while we were dragging you down here. I need to know if you were telling the truth.” He nudged the plate closer to her. “It’s been almost a day since we’ve brought you down here. You must be hungry.”

“Are you trying to bribe me with food?”

“Maybe.” He grinned, and the expression turned his intimidating face into one that was surprisingly handsome. “I’ve never given much thought to the world outside this cavern, other than when hunting. But even then, the forest isn’t a thrilling place to be.”

She shouldn’t smile at him. She shouldn’t do anything other than glare at this young man. He’d dragged her down here with his brothers. He’d been the one to lock her up into the darkness for who knows how long. He claimed it had only been a day, but she swore it was a week.

“We call it the Gloaming,” she muttered while still staring at the food. “The forest is dangerous and dark. Apparently, we were traveling through the wrong place. My companions and I weren’t even supposed to end up here. I wasn’t lying when I said we were headed to the Fields of Somber.”

That was the last time she’d give Goliath the map, that was for sure. He’d been confident in his skills to direct them where they all needed to go. Obviously, the dwarf had overestimated his abilities.

“The Gloaming.” Draven tasted out the word on his tongue, head tilted. “I like it.”

“I’m glad,” she replied, although she wasn’t so sure how honest the words were. It wasn’t as though she wanted to be here, and she didn’t want to create any kind of relationship with this young man.

But if he could get her out of the dungeon, then she had to try. He’d need to admire her more than his mother did, that much she was certain of. And if that required that she tell him more about where she was from, then Lore could do that.

Her only chance was to beguile him, as Beauty might say. That would be more than a little difficult. They were so different. His people thought half breeds like herself were less than human. Not even good enough to be a mortal, and definitely not good enough to be an elf.

It would be pure luck if she could get this young man to pay her any mind at all, but she supposed she had to try.

Lore shifted so her hair covered the points of her shorter ears and then gestured to the food he’d laid out.
