3. Stop breathing for two seconds

Take a small breath in and out through your nose. Hold your breath for two seconds (you don’t need to pinch your nose).

4. Smooth breathing for 30 seconds

Breathe carefully and gently, keep your breathing smooth – as if you are trying to soothe your lungs. Continue for at least 30 seconds and keep your hand over your mouth.

Breathe smoothly for 30 seconds

Stop cough technique

Keeping your hand over your mouth increases your awareness of the urge to cough, making it easier to break the cough habit. Finally take your hand away from your mouth. If you still feel a tickle in your throat, repeat the technique from the beginning.
