They both washed and changed before having dinner in the usual restaurant. After dinner Bill asked, “Cider in the bar?”
She nodded and he quipped: “On me.”
They sat in a booth and soon each had a large glass of hard cider in front of them. Bill raised his and said, “Cheers to Parsons and the Turbinia.”
She added, “Cheers to Parsons and the Turbinia and to you for pushing Parsons into doing something he normally would never do.”
“And,” added Bill, “To the beautiful young lady who saved us both from drowning.”
Still not having taken a sip of their drink, Shirley went on, “And to both of our agencies that sent us here.”
They finally took a sip and Bill arched an eyebrow as he asked, “So, do you do a lot of work for Scotland Yard?”
She shook her head, “Not Scotland Yard alone. I mostly help my friend on tough murder cases for the London Police Department.”
Bill shook his head and said, “Shirley, I have never met a woman who is so independent . . . especially in these times and your power of observance and deduction is nothing but outstanding.”
Shirley sat forward and placed her elbows on the table, looked him straight in his eyes and said, “My powers of observance and deduction may be highly overstated. Let me give you an example: I once used my aunt’s vacuum cleaner in an experiment. I put it on and observed that a typical roll of transparent tape lost its ability to stick to paper while my uncle’s disposable razor blade became dull. With all of my powers, I cannot understand why that happened. Can you?”
Bill shrugged, “No. It doesn’t seem to make sense. What does a vacuum cleaner have to do with transparent tape or a disposable blade?”
She sat back in her seat and a huge smile came across her face. “Tell me Bill, is there a King or Queen of England in your time?”
Bill almost choked on his drink, sputtered and said, “W-What do you mean, ‘my time?’”
“Simple my friend, you come from the future.”
Bill pursed his lips and blew out as he asked, “Where did you get that from?”
She sat forward and with the same smile, patted his hand and said, “Don’t worry, my friend, your secret is safe with me.”
Bill visibly relaxed, “Tell me, why do you think that I’m from the future?”
“After dinner the day you fell off the dock you suggested we go down by the water and I said there were mosquitos. You answered; ‘perhaps we’ll bring a flyswatter.’ Do you remember?”
“Sort of.”
“Well, that night I telephoned my friend and asked if there was such a device as a flyswatter and he got back to me with the answer: No, however, a gentleman named, Robert Montgomery of Illinois, U.S.A is working on one and my friend feels that it its patent should be awarded in 1900.”
“And what makes your friend a fount of information?”
“He has high ranking friends internationally and most are indebted to him for one reason or another.
